Universal Input High Brightness (HB) LED Driver

Sunnyvale, CA, March 2, 2010 – ASIC Advantage, Inc. (AAI) announces the release of the AAL4010, a peak current mode controller for high brightness LEDs. The AAL4010 is intended for use with buck converter topologies, with provision for constant frequency or constant off-time modes of operation, with a power friendly 0.25V for the current limit. With minimal parts count, it allows for quick, straight-forward implementation of LED lighting control with strings of various configurations.

A principal feature of the AAL4010 is its high voltage linear regulator, functional from 7.5V to 500V input, enabling startup or operation with no external power source (for sufficiently small load requirements). Use of a housekeeping supply requires few additional components, and will improve system efficiency and reliability. The value of this feature is enhanced by the package, AAI’s Voltage Enhanced 28-Pin QFN (V28A); the package provides for a full 2.5mm of creepage distance between the high voltage input (HV) and other low voltage signals of the 4mm x 7.5mm QFN. Additionally, the thermal impedance is almost 1/2 of that typically found in SO-8 packages with high voltage ICs.

Additional features enable a variety of user options. The PWM frequency is resistively set, typically up to 200kHz. The LD pin provides for a linear dimming, by reducing the peak current limiting point, while the PWMD pin enables the input of a PWM dimming signal controlled by duty cycle. The use of PWM dimming is more complex, but is better suited for more precise maintenance of color temperature.

The AAL4010 Evaluation Board provides a fast track design start, showing the ability to implement a design in a small form factor, with few additional components needed. The board allows for exercise of the dimming linearly, as well as providing for creation of a PWM signal for PWM diming evaluation based on an analog voltage. The Evaluation Board is setup for universal input (85V to 265Vac), with switchable valley-fill PFC (90% PF), as well as constant off time control and low voltage housekeeping supply to enable greater than 90% efficiency. Protection features include load overvoltage protection and a switchable current limit set-point, with soft start, as well as inrush current limiting. Finishing features include an enable function, as well as full EMI filter for FCC CISPR Class B compatibility.
