AAI Releases New IPS402 LED Buck Controller with Dynamic Bus Modulation Print
New IPS402 LED Buck Controller Providing Dynamic Bus Modulation for Improved Efficiency, with Sample and Hold for Current Sense to Enhance Stability and Reduce Flicker in PWM Dimming

Sunnyvale, CA, July 7, 2010 – ASIC Advantage, Inc. (AAI) announces the IPS402, a buck controller for LED lighting from ASIC Advantage, Inc. (AAI) designed to provide tight current regulation, with additional features intended to improve luminaire efficiency and dimming performance (non-provisional patents filed).  The primary 300mV on-chip reference is accurate to within ±2% for regulation of the string current.  The ISENSE current signal is processed through a sample and hold (S&H) circuit.  In addition, the control loop is internally compensated.

In applications using a PWM dimming signal of several hundred Hertz, the S&H acts to stabilize the current signal with the extended off times that are present with low frequency dimming signals and low duty cycles.  In addition, the IPS402 generates a signal (FB) that is inversely proportional to the operating duty cycle of the IPS402.  This signal can be combined with a primary power factor corrector (PFC) to dynamically modify the bus regulation point of the PFC stage, such that the buck regulator operates at high duty cycle (85% to 90%).  This ensures maximum efficiency of the buck stage, similar to operation of a linear regulator with minimum overhead for maximum efficiency.  Note that multiple bucks (IPS402’s) can be operated in combination while working to maintain a minimum effective bus voltage and maximum effective duty cycle of operation.  This proprietary methodology (non-provisional patent filed) is detailed in the applications material associated with the IPS402.  As with similar proprietary circuit techniques relating to AAI’s mixed-signal ICs, a free license for use of this feature is granted with the purchase of the associated IC (such as the IPS402).

The IPS402 also features a PWM dimming input and an IADJ input for regulation to a lower voltage level or use as a linear dimming input.  The switching frequency is user selectable through the settable oscillator frequency by an external resistor (RBIAS).  The gate-drive current for the off-chip MOSFET of 100mA source and 170mA sink.  The operating voltage (VC) is regulated via a shunt regulator to 7.2V to 8.0V.  The IPS402 is offered in an 8-Pin SOIC and 8-Pin DIP, with commercial and industrial temperature ratings.

There are two evaluation systems associated with the IPS402, one at 50W implemented with 4 12.5W strings of LEDs and one at 12.5W with a single 12.5W LED string.  The 50W system, the AAEV402-50, has 4 IPS402 controllers, with provision for PWM dimming input, proper management of the FB signal for bus voltage management in a mutli-string application, etc.  The AAEV402-50 is designed to work with either a dc input or one of AAI’s dimmable PFC evaluation systems upcoming from AAI.  The AAEVLOAD-50-XXX (XXX – LED Manufacturer) is a 4-string, 50W LED load board designed to be compatible with the AAEV402-50.  The 12.5W system, the AAEV402-12.5-XXX (XXX – LED Manufacturer), comes with a single 12.5W string, with provision for PWM dimming input.  It also is designed to work from a DC input, or one of AAI’s dimmable PFC evaluation systems from AAI, with the ability to drive the load from the PFC stage with the IPS402 Buck Stage bypassed.  Contact the factory or your local representative for available LED Manufacturer options for the required system.

The IPS402 is one of an extensive, feature varied list of Mixed Signal ICs available from ASIC Advantage.  We recommend you consult the factory or your local representative for a copy of ASIC Advantage’s new 2009-2010 Mixed-Signal IC Short Form for the most comprehensive list of Power Management, LED Controllers, Portable Electronics, DC Motor Drive, Sensor and Instrumentation as well as Radiation-Tolerant products available from ASIC Advantage.
