New AAL406 LED Fault Monitor and Bypass to Extend System Uptime and Enhance Maintenance Options for LED Lighting Sunnyvale, CA, July 20, 2010 – ASIC Advantage, Inc. (AAI) announces the AAL406, providing Fault Monitor and Bypass functionality for LED Lighting solutions. The AAL406 from ASIC Advantage, Inc. (AAI) combines monitoring and bypass features to enable continued operation and better system management of an array of LEDs in a lighting application. LED lighting solutions and their higher cost are accompanied by greater expectations for reliability and longevity. Utilizing the features of the AAL406 can benefit applications featuring an array of LEDs by ensuring continued string operation in the event of an LED open failure, while also allowing opportunities for improved system management and maintenance. The AAL406 uses a proprietary architecture (non-provisional patent filed) to enable unlimited cascade connection of individual ICs to connect to 3 LEDs at a time per IC, where each IC is powered by drawing a minimal amount of current for powering of the IC from the LED operating current. The architecture also allows for generation of a ground referenced fault signal for any LED failure within the string. Any short or open of an LED is reported by the fault signal of the IC while any open is bypassed by an internal SCR within the IC to ensure continued operation of the string in which a fault has occurred. The voltage drop of the AAL406 bypass SCR is sufficiently low, that when combined with the low thermal impedance of the metal-tabbed 8-Pin SOIC, the AAL406 can be reliably operated over a broad range of operating currents and temperatures. With proper board design, the AAL406 can safely be used with LEDs operating from 50mA to 750mA. The AAL406 is designed to operate over an Automotive Temperature range of -40ºC to +125ºC. The AAL406 is offered in tubes of 98 pcs or in tape and reel as multiples of 2500. The AAL406 is priced at $0.49 USD/ea for 1k pcs, with progressively lower pricing offered for larger volumes. The evaluation system for the AAL406, the AAEV406, features a string of 6 LEDs with 2 AAL406s and 6 switches to emulate opens LEDs and 2 jumper positions to emulate LEDs shorting in the string. The AAEV406 is designed to operate from a DC input of 25V to 40V, and includes a buck regulator for regulation of the 350mA of the LED string implemented using the IPS402. The AAEV406 is available for $59.
