Low Input Voltage Boost Controller

The AAL415 is an addition to the legacy AAL405 fully integrated boost controller. The AAL415 allows for higher voltage boost by using an external MOSFET and diode. The AAL415 contains an onboard charge pump to allow start up and operation down to 0.8V, the typical end of discharge voltage for most single cell batteries.

The AAL415 uses a unique feature to eliminate the current sense resistor in the source of the power MOSFET. Current in an inductor with a fixed voltage applied is analogous to voltage of a capacitor with a fixed current applied. Use of this circuit allows the current increase in the inductor to be predicted by the voltage increase on a capacitor. When the switch is off, complete energy transfer is detected as the field of the inductor reverses and causes the voltage of the inductor to drop.
