New Family of Enhanced Low Voltage SMPS Controllers from ASIC Advantage for Low Cost, High Efficiency, Low Power Switching Power Supplies Sunnyvale, CA, June 18, 2008 – ASIC Advantage, Inc. announces the introduction of a new group of SMPS controllers in the Power Management family, targeted for lower voltage applications. This group, consisting of the IPS315, IPS315H, and IPS318, is a lower input voltage derivation from the IPS15, IPS15H, and IPS18 controllers, respectively. With the ability of accepting input voltages as low as 7.2V, these controllers are ideal for lower voltage applications such as automotive. Much like their original counterparts, the IPS315, IPS315H, and IPS318 share the same basic core features. All devices incorporate an internal error amplifier and voltage reference for direct feedback into the controller allowing for soft start and active PWM. A shunt regulator, operating much like a zener diode, steadies the supply voltage around a typical value of 7.2V allowing maximum flexibility for powering the chip. Cycle to cycle over-current protection is made available by using the ISENSE pin to monitor a current sense resistor connected to the source of the power MOSFET. If the voltage detected at ISENSE is over approximately 700mV, the chip will turn off the driven MOSFET. Other principle core features include a precision oscillator, power shutdown for standby modes, undervoltage lockout, and thermal shutdown protection. The IPS315H expands on the core features of the IPS315 by introducing Hiccup mode to safely sustain overload conditions. Unlike the IPS315, the IPS315H now uses the ISENSE pin to trigger the Hiccup mode instead of completely powering down the MOSFET. The trigger is activated when the condition, defined by an internal digital counter, is present for an excess time of operation at maximum current. Hiccup mode will continually reset and restart the chip until the overload condition is no longer present. The SMPS can remain overloaded indefinitely since the peak current in the load is still high enough to be able to return to normal mode and the duty cycle is low enough that the average current drops below 100mA. Further building upon the core structure, the IPS318 adds a Cycle-Skip mode in addition to the features offered in the IPS315H allowing for very low standby power consumption during no load or light load conditions. The OPTO pin is pulled to the internal 5V rail through an on-chip resistor which has a nominal value of 50kOhms to allow for operation at maximum duty cycle when Vopto is approximately 4V. If Vopto falls below the light load condition threshold of 900mV, cycle-skipping is activated and power consumption will be kept to a minimum. Cycle-skipping remains active if 0V ≤ Vopto ≤ 900mV and the chip resumes normal operation once Vopto > 900mV. The IPS315, IPS315H and IPS318 are offered in RoHS compliant 8-Pin PDIP or 8-Pin SOIC package options. Pricing in quantities of 1k begin at $0.22 for the SOIC package and $0.27 for the DIP version, with lower pricing available for higher volumes.
